Redlining – the systematic disinvestment of some neighborhoods and people in favor of others on the basis of race – shaped cities and suburbs across the nation. An exhibit researched, written, and created by staff at the Johnson County Museum in Overland Park, Kansas explored the long history and modern legacies of redlining. In this presentation titled REDLINED: Cities, Suburbs, and Segregation, exhibit project lead and curator, Andrew R. Gustafson, will take a deep dive into redlining’s roots in the Civil War era, private discriminatory practices of the early 20th century, federalization of policy during the Great Depression, amplification of the system in the postwar era, attempts to deconstruct the framework during the Civil Rights era, and surprising legacies that impact communities nationally.
